3D printer creates ice sculptures

Paper-mache, candy, and human cells have all been seen flowing through 3D printers for custom fabrication work, but students and faculty at Canada’s McGill University have a cheaper prototyping material: plain ol’ H2O. They recently modified this Fab@Home Model 1 by replacing the soft goo extruders with a temperature-controlled water delivery system, and set about making decorative ice sculptures and a large beer mug for good measure. While the academic project is officially supposed to explore “economic alternatives to intricate 3D models of architectural objects,” we’re not sure architects will want much to do with prototypes that drip… but tourism might well get a boost from liquor sold in frosty custom containers. We’re thirsty just looking at them.

Visit any of Indonesia’s islands, and chances are a day trip to one of this massive archipelago’s volcanoes will be on your itinerary.  Many of them are still active, beguiling you with their surreal landscapes, with guides enticing you to smear the steamy, grey volcanic mud on your face for a quick facial.  Eventually the smell of the sulfur will lead you to hike back down the mountain or to run back to your tourist bus.  But there is more than the “wow” factor:  the Indonesian government recently announced plans to develop 4000 megawatts of geothermal energy from its volcanoes by 2014.

While the chattering classes debate China’s and India’s future impact on the earth’s energy supply, Indonesia is a sleeping giant that is slowly emerging on the world’s economic scene.  After years of sluggish growth and corruption under Suharto’s regime, Indonesia is reducing its debt, attracting more foreign direct investment, and has implemented financial reforms.  Poverty is declining, but still snares about 18% of its population of about 230 million people, 35% of whom do not have electricity—yet.

Sepeda Motor Listrik Dengan Panel Touch-screen Ubuntu

Sepeda motor listrik mulai semakin meluas. Walau belum bisa bersaing dengan sepeda motor konvensional berbasis internal-combustion engine,  sepeda motor listrik mulai menawarkan daya tarik uniknya.  Model sepeda motor listrik yang tampak pada gambar adalah prototype dari Norwegia, berdasar sasis sepeda motor Honda dengan ekor dipotong dan mesin dihilangkan, diganti tumpukan batere Nickel-Metal, lalu dibungkus custom bodywork.

Speda motor listrik ini dilengkapi panel touchs-creen dengan Sistem Operasi Linux Ubuntu. Panel touch-screen ini menampilkan status sepeda motor  (kecepatan, temperatur), juga navigasi GPS dan, mungkin game Tux Racer. Sepeda motor listrik ini dirakit di Green School Motorcycles and Akershus University College.

IBM Kembangkan Chip Pulsa Cahaya

Signal elektrik mentransfer informasi antar chip komputer menggunakan jalur tembaga, proses ini menyerap banyak energi. Kini para peneliti di IBM mengembangkan proses yang membuang sama sekali jalur tembaga dan menggunakan pulsa cahaya untuk berkomunikasi. “Nanophotonic avalanche photodetector” menggunakan whopping dengan konsumsi energi 20 kali lebih sedikit dibanding device yang ada sekarang.

Pulsa cahaya ditransmisikan via silicon circuit, suatu proses yang dapat mentransmisikian data hingga 40G bits per second dengan batere 1,5 volt atau ekivalen batere AA.

Nanophotonic avalanche photodetectors bukan hal baru tapi IBM mengklaim bahwa versi miliknya adalah yang tercepat.

Dalam waktu dekat kita akan melihat penerapan teknologi IBM dalam peralatan elektronik, diharapkan dalam 5 tahun untuk high-end-server dan dalam 10 tahun untuk sistem video game dan cell phone. Jika sudah dirilis, chip semacam ini dapat secara drastis menghemat konsumsi energi gadget yang kita gunakan sehari-hari.

Google: Dalam 3 Tahun PC Desktop Tidak Lagi Relevan

Berbicara pada Digital Landscapes conference di UCD, direktur penjualan online Google Eropa, John Herlihy mengatakan bahwa Google saat ini lebih fokus pada mobile device. Ia mengklaim bahwa mobile device akan menjadi semakin penting dibanding PC desktop.

“Dalam tiga tahun, desktop bakal tidak lagi relevan. Di Jepang, kebanyakan riset saat ini dilakukan pada smart phone, bukan PC,” katanya.

Memang, dengan Android dan Nexus One Google menunjukkan komitmen untuk memperluas dominasinya dari dunia online ke dunia mobile. Tetapi akankah PC Dekstop benar-benar menjadi tidak relevan? Tergantung bagaimana anda melihatnya. Google tidak benar-benar tertarik bagaimana kita mengedit foto; minat Google lebih pada dimana kita menyimpannya, dan terus-menerus meningkat, kita menyimpannya di tempat yang menjadi bagian domain mereka – the cloud.
